Westhampton Beach High School’s star runner Trevor Hayes earned an All-American title following his stellar performance at the Nike nationals at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. To acquire the title, Hayes took fifth place out of a field of 48 runners in the 2000-meter steeplechase.

“I feel very fortunate to have qualified just to compete in the Nike National Championships and to have earned a spot on the podium which included High School All- American status,” said Hayes following the race.

To earn his invitational at nationals, Hayes was required to run a qualifying time in the steeplechase at previous competitions.

Hayes started running in eighth grade after earning an All-County award in tennis as a seventh grader. Since committing to running, Hayes has received multiple All-County, All-League and All-State recognition in all three seasons of competitive running – cross-country and indoor and outdoor track. He also qualified for the Nike National Outdoor Championships in 2021, 2022 and 2023 in both the steeplechase and one-mile run.

Looking forward, Hayes hopes that the Hurricanes cross-country team can galvanize its efforts and reclaim the Suffolk County Class B championship. He also has his sights set on placing in the top three at the NYSPHSAA cross-country championships and the end of the season.
