To inspire the spread of kindness, Westhampton Beach High School Youth to Youth Club members recently spent time with Westhampton Beach Elementary School fifth graders. As part of the event, the high school students led a series of activities related to kindness, positive decision making and acceptance.

Middle school Kiwanis members donate to Quogue Wildlife Refuge

Westhampton Beach Middle School Kiwanis Club members recently donated $1,000 to the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. The students spent the school year raising the funds through a variety of fundraisers, including a movie night bucket raffle. Westhampton Beach Elementary School students recently celebrated Police Day, during which local law enforcement officers spoke to them about different jobs and technologies in the field. The students learned about the SWAT team, K-9 unit, helicopter unit and police drones.

Hurricane Watch earns two first-place awards

The Westhampton Beach High School Hurricane Watch news broadcast brought home two first-place trophies from the annual BASH Awards for high school broadcasting. They earned top honors in the Best Local Multimedia Reporting category — sponsored by Newsday — for their coverage of the Westhampton wildfires through Hurricane Watch, Instagram and whbnews.com. The team also won Best Arts, Entertainment & Culture Reporting for their Black History Month segment, which highlighted the rich history of Black music.

To earn the awards, Hurricane Watch, led by broadcast journalism teachers Kirsten Mett and Dariah Luciano, competed against more than 50 schools and 1,000 students from across Long Island and upstate New York.
