Fundations

Fundations Level K
Fundations Level K introduces our youngest learners to the foundational skills needed to become confident readers and writers. Through a structured literacy approach, students build essential sound and word-level skills while also engaging with a wide variety of texts, including poetry, narrative stories, and informational passages.

By the end of Kindergarten, students will have developed strong early literacy habits, such as recognizing rhymes, segmenting sounds and syllables, writing upper- and lowercase letters, and identifying high-frequency words. They will also begin reading and spelling simple words, using correct punctuation and capitalization, and retelling stories with attention to characters, setting, and events. Students learn to distinguish between narrative and informational texts, build vocabulary, and practice reading with fluency and expression.

Fundations Level K lays the groundwork for lifelong literacy by combining systematic phonics instruction with meaningful reading and writing experiences.

Fundations Overview

Heggerty (Phonemic Awareness)

Heggerty (Phonemic Awareness) Phonemic Awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds, called phonemes. A child who is phonemically aware is able to isolate sounds, blend and segment sounds, and manipulate sounds in spoken words. The daily activities in the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum provide students with oral and auditory skills to develop these essential reading skills. The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum provides educators with 35 weeks of explicit Phonemic Awareness lessons.

The blended print and digital curriculum covers all Next Generation Science Standards at every grade level. Exploration is the heart of science. The Quest problem-based activity is an exploration that anchors each topic. Students "figure out" the problem's solution as they navigate the topic's lessons. It's real science with engaging phenomena. Students apply their knowledge and skills to master the new science standards.
