Westhampton Beach High School junior Yulianna Mendez-Yaxon will be performing with members of her band at the United Nations affiliated Aspire Artemis Foundation Gala on May 18 in New York City.

“This is really a huge opportunity,” she said.

Mendez-Yaxon will be performing on keyboard with her band, The Squeaky Belts. The band was assembled as part of the East End Arts Council music program, through which Mendez-Yaxon studies music with Bakithi Kumalo, who, among numerous credentials, has been the bass player for Paul Simon's bands.

When not working on rock music at the East End Arts Council, Mendez-Yaxon is practicing and performing on flute and piccolo with the symphonic band at her school. An All-County musician, she has also been selected to perform in prestigious concerts with the New York State Band Directors Association, the Suffolk County Music Educators Association and the Hampton Music Educators Association.
