Westhampton Beach Senior Earns National Merit Semifinalist Title

Westhampton Beach High School senior Gavin Vander Schaaf has been recognized as a semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program as a result of his outstanding scores on the qualifying exam.

Vander Schaaf is now among 16,000 students across the nation competing for $28 million in scholarships. To earn the title, he placed among the top students who took the 2021 PSAT.

Vander Schaaf is a dedicated student who participates in a number of extracurriculars. He is an AP Scholar with Distinction, co-president of his school’s Interact Club, a member of his school’s Youth to Youth executive board and a singer in the chamber choir. Outside of school, he volunteers for the nonprofit Second Serve organization, for which he acts as the national director of human resources. He is also senior leader for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program. He intends to study secondary education in college.

Of his score, he said, “I studied hard and wanted to do my best, but I didn’t expect to get to such a high level.”

The Westhampton Beach School District congratulates Vander Schaaf on this notable achievement.
